2014 Summer TV Part 2: EXTANT, THE STRAIN, OUTLANDER, UNDER THE DOME

Are women floating and working and being alone in space a thing?  Cause I feel like CBS is trying to take some of Alfonso Cuaron's juju by premiering a series starring another well known actresss.  Halle Berry is the astronaut on a lone mission, but comes back with some problems to deal with - EXTANT.  I won't spoil it for you, but if you do want to know what Halle has to deal with just look at the trailer.  I'm liking the fact that this looks like some real science fiction, and with a woman of color in the lead.  You probably know how truly rare that is.  The show actually looks deep.  Spielberg is Exec. Producer so it might have that special something.  EXTANT premieres July 9th at 9pm est.  And the week before, look for the return of UNDER THE DOME on June 30th at 10pm.  Stephen King is actually writing and extending the story beyond his original book.

Next up is Guellarmo del Toro's THE STRAIN, based on his and Chuck Hogen's novel trilogy.  There hasn't been much of a look into the show, but the teasers are creepy.  Check the one below to see what I mean.  I haven't read the books either, but the story deals with virus outbreaks and vampirism.  With Guellermo and FX behind it, I couldn't ask for more.  Look for the premiere on July 13th at 10pm est.

And on August 9th, another female lead takes a trip.  Not into space, but backwards through time.  Starz is featuring its new series - OUTLANDER.  Claire, played by Caitriona Balfe, is thrown back in time from 1945 to 1743.  She doesn't know why, but she's dropped in the middle of a war and has to figure out how to survive.  The story is based on the books by Diana Galbadon.

Stay tuned for 2014 Summer TV Part 3.

2014 Summer TV Part 1: WHETON, DEFIANCE, DOMINION, THE LAST SHIP, FALLING SKIES, CROSSBONES

SYFY has a couple new shows coming soon.  One of them actually starts this week (of this posting).  THE WILL WHEATON PROJECT is a show hosted by Will Wheaton, as you can tell by the title.  You remember the kid from Star Trek that always wanted to be with Picard and the ship's command. Yes, that Will Wheton.  Now he's piloting his own show, but we will have to find out if it flies to the stars or burns in the upper atmosphere.  Look for it airing on May 27th at 10pm est.  It's a World of Science Fiction in 30 Minutes. Their tagline, not mine.

Another show coming this Summer to Syfy is DOMINION.  Out of the two, this is actually more interesting to me.  I am skeptical.  But they do have my attention with the dystopian future that's set 25 years after the film Legion (2010).  It's the fact that the show is based on that wish-washy Angels vs Man film that makes me question if it will be a good series.  But the more I see of the show and the cast, the more I'm wondering if my judgements are misplaced.  Look for this coming in June 19th at 9pm est.

And coming back for the Summer for its second season is DEFIANCE.  I don't think the show hit its potential the first season, but I still liked the direction they went with, and the characters they featured.  It airs June 19th at 10pm est., right after Dominion.

TNT is premiering its 4th season of FALLING SKIES, which is coming back June 22 at 10pm est.  I didn't think the show would last, but by the second season, the humans vs. aliens drama found its legs and started running.  At least that's the report I get back from my fellow geeks that watch the show.  I plan on catching up.

And the network named after dynamite is also premiering another dystopian future show on the same night called THE LAST SHIP, where a virus has decimated the earth's population and a lone navel vessel has to find the cure.  Micheal Bay is producing this one, so don't be surprised at the amount of explosions.  Actually, from the trailer, there will be action, but probably more drama than giant robots.  Look for it on June 22 at 9pm before Falling Skies.

For you fans that like your action with a little more Swordplay than aliens and angels; there are two period shows coming this summer. One is a pirate adventure airing on NBC this week called CROSSBONES.  I featured it previously when posting the trailer Here.  I'm going to check this out because of two reasons - John Malkovich is playing Black Beard in a way I've never seen.  And there is a new and beautiful face with a sword in hand that might be the Michonne of this high seas series - Tracy Ifeachor is playing a character by the name of Nenna.  She's had minor roles in Doctor Who and other TV shows, but I think she, and some other new faces, might make an impact. Look for it on May 30th at 10pm.

And of course what would a British television network like BBC America be without doing a series based on THE MUSKETEERS.  The interesting thing about this series though is that one of the famous fencing warriors is of mixed race.  Kind of like the original author of the Book series, Alexandre Dumas.  Look for the All For One cheer to premiere June 22nd at 9pm.

Test Your 1980s Horror Movie Queue!

You horror fans proudly brag on how many horror films you've seen. I'm especially talking to you 80s kids that stayed up past your bedtime watching scary films on cable, or sneaking into some R rated horror film with your teen crowd. Well, let us see how you blood splatter aficionados measure up when it comes to your 1980s Horror Movie Queue. It's you comparing your horror movie history with this list of 250 horror films from the 1980s. I created the list recently from an imdb search. But if you go back and check again, the order will probably change. It depends on the voting that day.

And for you 90s Sci-fi fans, I did the same thing with Test Your 1990s Sci-fi Movie Queue, and some people were struggling to make it far down the list.

The 3rd Marvel Film No One Is Talking About - BIG HERO SIX

I know you guys love your Marvel Movies!  And everybody went crazy over CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.  I'm sure the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY isn't going to disappoint audiences either.

Marvel said they were going to produce two superhero films a year.  But Marvel is owned by Disney, and Disney didn't pay 4 Billion Dollars to just come out with a few Superheroes a year.  They own rights to 5,000 Marvel characters. The story potential is virtually unlimited.

Even though we are getting two Marvel live action films this year, we are actually getting three films altogether - BIG HERO 6. A 3-D animated film based on a Marvel comic (see below).  The Disney rendition won't be as serious a story as the comic I'm sure. But it might be a fun ride for the family.  Check out the trailer below. But don't pay attention to the end premiere date, the film is coming out this Fall.

THE BIG HERO SIX COMIC, created in 1998 by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau. These are the same guys behind Ben 10 and other successful animated properties.

GSB Podcast: Kaiju 2: The Godzuki boogaloo!

The Nerdy Venoms were going big in this episode.  First they reviewed GODZILLA 2014. The film seemed popular with all present, but then Big Baba Rob from THE BLACK GEEKS had to give his rebuttal. He was so disappointed.  Then the nerdiness continued with a talk about some of the classic Kaiju that Godzilla films featured in the past.  Geek Soul Brother wasn't on the call just yet, but I backed the gang up on the chat. Enjoy.

GEEK SOUL BROTHER and the 5 NERDY VENOMS airs 10pm eastern on Tuesdays for News and Movie and TV reviews on talkshoe.com.  Search for Geek Soul Brother in iTunes and subscribe to get up-to-date downloads of each episode.  And keep up with future episodes by subscribing on Talkshoe, or give us a 'like' on Facebook and get updates when a new show is scheduled.

Fox's HIEROGLYPH! Ancient Egyptians are Very Very... British!

I didn't know Egypt was conquered by the British!  But as you can see, a few must have traveled back in time by way of the Tardis from Doctor Who, and taken roles among the royalty.  At least that's the only reason I can use to explain the cast of the upcoming Fox show HIEROGLYPH.

From the trailer, and what I heard on the geek streets, this might be Fox's attempt to make their own Game of Thrones type of show.  A little drama, a little sex, and some magic in an ancient world sounds about right.

As for the representation of Ancient Egyptians, many people are hatin', and saying Fox totally missed the mark.  There are some PoC in the show, but not enough for me to believe that this is authentic. For those of you that say "What's the big deal?" it's always been a problem for Hollywood to represent Ancient Egypt the way scientific research has shown it to be.  I'm glad they at least went with Condola Rashad as Nefertari, and lead actor Reece Ritchie is on the mixed side also.

Still, in my opinion the Pharaoh Ramses II...

... looked a lot more like this Guy from Sudan...
... than what Hollywood usually portrays.

So are you going to watch it?  Or give it a thumbs down for one reason or another?  If you choose to watch, look for it coming soon to Fox.

Test Your 1990s Sci-Fi Movie Queue!

So you are a Sci-fi movie fan! And you're a die hard Nineties kid.  You wear both medals proudly.  But just how many Science Fiction films from the 90s have you really seen? I got this list from a search on imdb.  I actually posted this a while ago, but did a new search for this update. At the time of this post the 2014 Godzilla film came out, which probably explains why Godzilla 1998 is third.  The search results change daily, but let's stick with this for now.

Go down the list and mark the first three films that you have never seen before, even partially. If you want to skip movies that you intentionally didn't watch then that's okay; I can't blame you for your possibly good tastes. The real test is to see which popular movies you missed entirely, whether in the theater or after the fact on TV.  So how far can you get? Past 50? Past 100? Past 5? I guess we will see.

My first film that got me was 147 - The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999). I can't quite recall seeing it thought I've heard of it before.  Since the full film is on Youtube, I'll probably be checking it out.  Looks like a Mating Guide out of Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe.

I hope some of you go back and watch the ones you might have missed. And if you didn't make it pass the first one, you need to attend the Geek Soul Brother school of Classic Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror before it becomes critical. I wish I had a school like that because it would be a crazy job that I would do all day.  Stay tuned for more lists from other decades. Later geeks.

TOUCH - A Short Scifi Film by Shola Amoo

I love little short Scifi films like this. Particularly with a black cast and by a black director.  I'm glad more are being produced.  And casting a beautiful woman like Tanya Fear is a win win.  I especially love the subtle storytelling style that Shola Amoo uses.  Shouts to Shadow and Act for posting this a while back.

GSB Podcast: SIDEKICKS AND TV CANCELLATIONS

Though this episode should probably have been called Let's Yell At MDawg, the Five Nerdy Venoms ran down the list of memorable Hero Sidekicks and even Villainous Henchmen.  But first the gang talked about all the TV shows that got canceled recently. Particularly bothersome was the axing of our geek favorites like THE NEIGHBORS and ALMOST HUMAN among others.  Toby-Wan hosted again and asked everyone questions like Why do we need sidekicks and What happens when partners turn into sidekicks?

GEEK SOUL BROTHER and the 5 NERDY VENOMS airs 10pm eastern on Tuesdays for News and Movie and TV reviews on TALKSHOE.COMSearch for Geek Soul Brother in iTunes and subscribe to get up-to-date downloads of each episode.  And keep up with future episodes by subscribing on Talkshoe, or give us a 'like' on Facebook and get updates when a new show is scheduled.

GSB Flashback: THEM! (1954)

Today I'm bringing the big bad bug fest from the fifties.  Nuclear fallout and animal mutations were fertile ground for Sci-fi filmmakers of that time.  One of the most famous was a thriller called THEM!

Even though the Giant Ant Models looked horrible (maybe even for that time), the tone of this sci-fi favorite took a serious look at the dangers of radiation and the disruption of the environment.  The story sets up a good mystery with questions like "Why are these people dying?... What are these big footprints?... What is that crazy noise that sounds like a bad Fan Belt in a car?".  And after the reveal that it was indeed giant insectoid killers, it was all about saving people and stopping the spread of a humongous ant colony.  It was pretty cool the way they kept the tension and fear going throughout the movie.  Hope you enjoy 1954's THEM, one of the top 'Over Grown Monster Animal' movies ever!

Look at NBC Trying To Actually Get CONSTANTINE Right!

We're already getting previews of new shows for the fall.  And I have to say that this is not a bad start.  The Keanu Reeves' Constantine left fans of the comic a little sour.  I personally liked it to a certain extent, but what do I know?  I haven't taken the chance to read any Hellblazer stories really.  I do know this though, a brunette haired American talking Constantine is a big No No.  On the other hand, for the good guy that treads the lines between Heaven, Earth and Hell, it looks like they got more than the hair color and dialect right.

Matt Ryan is Constantine, the rough edged London anti-hero that just can't let evil spirits do their evil things.  Harold Perrineau is Manny, an angel and maybe voice of reason.  Lucy Griffiths plays Liv, the young woman that is suddenly drawn into Constantine's world.  For those of you geeks out there that know the stories, tell me if this Fall 2014 series looks promising by the trailer:

Five of the Best Mothers of Sci-Fi

Happy Mother's Day to all the geek and non-geek mothers out there.

Mothers go through so much. Childbirth, crying kids, cupcakes, birthday parties, runny noses, sad days and happy days. But most handle it with love and tenderness. I know my mother did. Being a black kid that had a propensity for daydreaming and a love for the unbelievable, I have to say that I had an awesome mom. And growing up, she certainly added to my geekiness by taking me to movies like Logan’s Run, Close Encounters, and Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster.

But few mothers go through what these Mothers of Sci-Fi go through. Cosmic kids, ghost attacks, transmutations, protecting the future of mankind. They’ve dealt with some pretty heavy situations. Here is Geek Soul Brother’s list of the Best Mom’s in Sci-Fi.

Sarah Conner – Sarah is the number one best mom. Chased by not one but 2 Terminators, she protected herself and then her son. And she wasn’t some babying mom that sheltered her kid. Oh no, she taught him everything he needed to know to survive and best Skynet in the future.

Sue Storm – Loving wife, caring mom and a damn powerful superhero. Mrs. Storm has had it tougher then 99% of all the other superheroes. Balancing her motherly ways while battling world threatening villains; the Invisible Woman is one of the best moms ever.

Lt. Sharon ‘Athena” Agothon – Who says a synthetic human can’t be a real mom? Not Sharon Agothon, Athena if your nasty. This number Eight model of the Cylons had a mission to ‘get busy’ with a human. But Sharon had something special in her circuits to fall in love with daddy and have a beautiful human-cylon baby named Hera. And when anybody came between her and her baby not even a fleet of starships, nor her troubled twin could stop her from getting her kid back.

Diane Freeling – I know it's not Sci-Fi but I thought she deserved to be in the list. This joint smoking soccer mom was doing a fine job taking care of her family, until an evil Poltergeist started haunting them. Now she doesn’t get any points for treating things as ‘cool’ with letting her daughter magically slide across the kitchen floor. I would have been outta there! But she made up for it when little Carol Anne got taken into purgatory. Talk about your Amber Alert. And with just a rope tied to her waist and a shaky husband holding the other end, she brought her little angel back from the edge of the ‘light’.

Amanda Greyson – Even with a cranky Vulcan husband who’s romanticism is that of a Sea Salmon, and a son with a chip on his little Vulcan shoulder, Spock’s human mother has always been there for her family. Ready with encouraging and sometimes stern wisdom for her son, Amanda shows the love that’s needed for an officer of Star Fleet. A moment of silence for her passing at the hands of J.J. Abrams and friends.

I'm sure you have many more suggestions. These are just some of the Mothers I thought of. Come on and tell me who you would put in the list?
