In this episode the Five Nerdy Venoms reviewed SPIDERMAN 2.  Toby-Wan Kenobi liked it okay, and The Private had a few problems with it.  But neither one of them hated it.

Also the gang talk about Comic and other geek Conventions.  They ask what's good about them and what's bad?  And which ones have each of them been at? Of course this episode includes Nerdy News and our usual geek topics.  Hope you enjoy.

GSB Flashback: THE THING (1982)

Welcome to another one of GSB FLASHBACK! This is my blog series where I suggest old films and Television shows for all you 'younger' geek brothers and sisters to watch.  You might think they're corny at first, but give them a chance and you will probably see how creative and original these films were back in the day.

Today's suggested film is one of my all time favorites. A classic sci-fi Horror called 'The Thing'.  It's about a stranded research team in the antarctic that finds themselves dealing with an alien that is hiding in plain sight... literally! Check out the trailer:

Oops!! Right monster, but Wrong trailer.  The version above is the 2011 The Thing, which is actually a remake of John Carpenter's classic 'The Thing' (1982); the real Flashback for today.  Carpenter's movie was a major achievement in horror at its time. Just like the movie 'Alien' was groundbreaking for its effects and sheer horror, 'The Thing' had done some effects never seen before. John Carpenter's vision made him the master of horror and 'The Thing' was, in my opinion, his crowning achievement. I think what set this movie apart for its time wasn't just the incredible pre-computer effects of the monster, but also that Carpenter used the device of paranoia in the storytelling so well. Every character couldn't trust the next. And the audience didn't know who to trust either. It may not hold the fear factor that movies have today, but it should still be entertaining to all:

Oh wait a minute! The 2011 version of The Thing is actually a remake of a remake? That's right, Carpenter took the idea from the original 1951 movie called "The Thing from Another World" directed by Christian Nyby, but unofficially directed by Howard Hawks which you can see in the dialog and shots.  Just to let you know, this is also one of my all time favorites of what I consider CLASSIC classic sci-fi/horror films. Watch this film if you get a chance, either before or after you watch Carpenter's film, and I think you will enjoy it and find the 1982 interpretation more interesting.

And all of this is actually based on a 1938 book called 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell. I haven't read it, but it's supposed to be pretty good. - GSB

New Trailer for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

I feel that not only will DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES deliver just as touching and thrilling a story as the first one, but also ALL the feels for the Ape families will up the drama ten fold.

Ceaser is back. And he's got plenty of company.  The apes have built themselves a really cool community.  Meanwhile the human society has fallen apart.  But humans will be human, meaning they can't learn anything from their tragedy.  Of course they go after the apes, but I don't think they are ready for an ape army that can fight back.  I'll be looking forward to seeing this in July.

GSB After Dark: STERLING, RACISM AND 200 NIGERIAN GIRLS

In this episode, the Five Nerdy Venoms got into great discussions on the recent remarks of Rod Serling, racism and the horrible situation where over 200 Nigerian school girls were kidnapped and now it's reported that some were sold off as wives / sex-slaves to neighboring countries.  Illumeenous headed the conversation with her fellow Venoms.  And not only are these injustices happening, but all over the world there are people being terrorized and killed. But where is the news coverage? Why aren't these young girls' plight being covered by news sources like the recent missing airplane?  I hope you find the discussion enlightening.

ROSEMARY'S BABY 2014! A Two Part TV Event!

So what's the word on the new NBC Mini-Series remake of Rosemary's Baby?  How many of you are looking forward to watching it?  I like that instead of making a horrible film remake, the studio instead created a two part TV Event.  It seemed for a time only a few networks were willing or had courage to do a mini-series. Syfy channel has been especially successful with their choices.

In case anybody isn't familiar with the story, Rosemary and her husband move into a beautiful place in the city with lovely neighbors.  But why do the neighbors and the elderly couple that own the place have such a special interest in them, especially Rosemary.  When she becomes pregnant, things get even more weird.  What's so special about Rosemary's Baby?  This story is based on a novel by Ira Levin, which was also made into a 1968 feature film starring Mia Farrow.  It's a horror classic for you fans of the genre.

I'm kind of looking forward to Zoe Saldana playing the role of Rosemary.  I think she will kill it, and I'm not tired of seeing her appear in film after film yet.  Though Hollywood is starting to saturate themselves with her as the 'it' girl with a little color added in.  I would have been interested to see what it would have been like if the husband (played by Patrick Adams) had been of Dominican descent also.  Visually I mean.  The characters could be of any cultural background as far as the story is concerned.

What about you guys? Do you like the idea of a two part TV special?  Who else would you have liked to have seen as Rosemary if not Zoe?  I guess we will see if it was really worth it when the mini-series premieres May 11th.  You can check the trailer unless you don't want spoilers of any kind.

GSB Flashback: FORBIDDEN PLANET

One of my favorites classic Sci-fi films of all time is FORBIDDEN PLANET.  This movie had a great mix of a spacecraft, a robot, a space damsel, a twisted doctor and a deadly creature on a distant planet.

The movie starts out with a military spaceship receiving orders to check if there were any survivors of a lost colony on the planet Altair 20 years prior.  When the crew comes close to the planet, they are surprised to hear a warning from the only survivor.  Not heeding the warning, Commander Adams orders the ship to land, and is greeted by a robot. The famous Robby the Robot. Robby escorts him and his 2 officers to Dr. Morbius and his 18 year old daughter Altaira.  Morbius explains that the rest of his party were killed 20 years earlier by a mysterious force.  But even though the doctor warns Commander Adams that he should take his men and leave, fearing this force will return, the commander is bound by orders to investigate.  And it didn't hurt that Altaira was a space hottie. Well, that’s where the fun starts.  Impossible murders by an unseen monster, and the discovery of an ancient dead alien race called ‘The Krell’ makes this movie continually more interesting as the story unfolds.  I don’t want to give any of the juicy parts away so I’ll just stop spoiling it here.  Don’t get fooled by the trailer… it’s a good flick:
